GOURMAND WORLD WINEBOOK AWARDS 2002

THE PROGRAM IN BRISSAC

This year we have listed in many cases both the winners to whom we give a Best in the World Gourmand Awards and the cookbooks that came close to winning, to whom we give an Honourable Mention. Thus 21 countries are present at the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards at the Chateau de Brissac. The best books are in English (28%), German (17%), French (16%), Spanish (14%), Scandinavian languages (6%), others (19%).

 This year over 21.000 cookbooks and wine books were published. The following list shows the Best in the World, the winners among 3500 that competed in 2002 in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.

The shorlists of US, UK, Australian, German, French, Spanish, Swedish winners will be sent separately.

WINE BOOKS

1.-Best Wine Book in the World

Winner

Our Best Wine Book in the World 2002 won in its national competition the awards for best design, best matching of food and wine, and best wine book photography. The recipes by 14 of the best swedish chefs show the current food and wine revolution in Sweden. This is an extremely well produced book, and it is simply the best, against very strong competition.

- Bolgens Vin Toralf Bolgen Med For Fatter Oivind Hanes Photos: Mats Widen

(Gyldendal Fakta-Norway) The author is the leading wine expert in Norway, and has published a very complete review of wine, with a pleasant point of view and personal opinions.

- Historia de los Utensilios del Vino, José Peñin, Teresa Pacheco (Pi & Erre-Spain)

There are not many books on the many instruments in the wine making and drinking process. This history of wine utensils is a worthy complement to the great book of Baron Edmond de Rothschild The Cult of Wine which received an award from us in 1997. It was published in 1997 by Gallimard, and there is an english edition. For the many international collectors of wine utensils, we hope this well illustrated spanish history book will also be translated.

  • 2.-Best Book in the World on Wine History
  • Winner

- Vino y Pasion, La Familia Benegas y el Vino, Fernando Vidal Buzzi (El Ateneo-Argentina). An excellent book on one wine family and its winery, with interesting details on the history of wine in Argentina, by a leading writer and journalist.

    Honourable Mention

- La Toneleria Tradicional y los Vinos de Canarias, by Juan José Otamendi Rodriguez-Bethencourt (El Grifo-Spain) Barrels are extremely important for wine and this history of barrel making in the Canary Islands is extremely well researched. The book was published to celebrate 225 years of wine making at El Grifo, the leading winery on Lanzarote island, with a wine well worth tasting.

    3.-Best Book in the World on French Wine

- Burgundy and its Wines, by Nicholas Faith  Introduction by Robert M.Parker Jr. Photos by Andy Katz (Duncan Baird Publishers-UK, Solar-France) Nicholas Faith talented writing manages to make simple the unique complexity of Burgundy. Photographer Andy Katz is an expert on Burgundy.

    Honourable Mention

- LArt de Vigne, Smith Haut-Lafitte et Sources de Caudalie, by Florence and Daniel Cathiard (Aubanel-France) The authors explain all aspects of owning, living and developping one of the best wineries in Bordeaux, their dream come true, and an excellent model.

    4.-Best Book in the World on European Wine
    (outside France)

    Winner

- The New and Classical Wines of Spain, by Jeremy Watson (Montagud-Spain) This reference book on Spanish wines is available in Spanish or English from the same publisher. It is the result of years of experience, and it mixes complete detailed information with expert opinions and thoughts. This is the best book on this subject.

    5.-Best Book  in the World on New World Wine

- Africa Uncorked, by John and Erica Platter (Kyle Cathie-UK) John Platter is already known for his guides to South African wines . With his wife he has now been the first to research wine in all of the African continent. Congratulations for this pioneering work!

    6.-Best Book in the World on Matching Food and Wine

This has been the most competitive category for wine books this year, due to being the strongest new trend in wine books .

We have two winners

- Desserts et Vins, Lenôtre et Olivier Poussier, Meilleur Sommelier du Monde (Solar-France) Olivier Poussier, Best Sommelier in the World, joins the pastry masters of Lenôtre for a reference book on desserts and wine.

- Classic, Das Kochbuch, Deutsches Weininstitut (Deutsches Weininstitut) This is the reference book on matching German wines and food.

    Honourable Mention

- Which Food? Which Wine, by Lawrence F.Saneck (LF.Saneck-USA)labor of love and expertize, which could be adapted by a big publisher to become every cookbooks companion.

    7.-Best Book in the World on Cooking with Wine, Beer or Spirits

    Winner:

- Das Einzig Wahre Warsteiner Kochbuch, by Kordula Werner (VGS-Germany) Cooking with beer is a strong trend in Germany, Canada, the US and other countries.

        8.-Best Wine Guide in the World

        Winner

- Good Wine Guide 2003, by Robert Joseph (Dorling Kindersley-UK) This guide is a model for others. It is comprehensive, easy to read, interesting for connoisseur or the beginner, for the professionnal or the casual wine drinker. This is the one book to have if you drink wine in Great Britain. Robert Joseph is the author of 20 books, and the founder editor of Wine Magazine.

    9.-Best Book in the World on Spirits

    Winner

- Krydda Med Hjärtat, 142 Satt Att Smaksätta Brännvin, by Jimmy Olsson, Solweig Olsson, photos Erland Andersson (Jimson-Sweden) Swedish spirits and brandies, in a beautifully produced book.

    10.-Best Wine Literature in the World

    Winner

- Warum der Wein korkt....und andere Weingeschichten, by Markus del Monego (Heel-Germany) Markus Del Monego, Best Sommelier in the World, shows a true talent in writing about wine. He explains why the wine cork, and other curious and  other historical wine facts.

    11.-Best Drinks Photography in the World 

    Winner

- El Agua en la Cocteleria del Siglo XXI Coordinated by Juan José Lapitz, photos José Luis Galiana, cocktails by Bernar Fernández, foreword by Juan B.Renart, Managing Director of  Vichy Catalan and Rafael Anson (Academia Española de Gastronomia-Federación de Barmans Españoles-Ediciones B-Spain) José Luis Galiana the photographer is a master of colours, a true artist. His photos of cocktails are innovative, as is this book on Water in Cocktails in the 21st Century. Published by the Spanish Academy of Gastronomy and the Federation of Barmen of Spain, José Luis Galiana is also the photographer for the finalist cookbook from Spain La Cocina de Akelare, El Sueño de Pedro Subijana

  • 12.-Best Wine Book in the World for Professionals
  • Winner

- De la Viña a la Bodega, Doce Siglos de Viñedo en Liébana, by Maria Teresa de la Fuente Royano, Sergio Martinez Martinez (Sociedad Economica de Amigos del Pais de Liébana-Cantabria-Spain) A most fascinating study for wine professionals of Liébana, in the region of Cantabria (capital: Santander) in the north of Spain. It analyzes the history, the present, the competitors, the neighbours, to try to plan for the future. This approach is a lesson for other wine professionals in Europe to understand the wine revolution in Spain and face their own future.

    13.-Best Wine Atlas in the World

    Winner

- Grand Atlas des Vignobles de France, Benoit France, préface de René Renou, President du Comité National Vins et Eaux de Vie de lInao (Solar-France) This year the french publish their first major atlas, with a very significant investment by publisher Solar and author Benoit France. The author is the best expert in France in wine maps, with a last name, France, which obliges him to be the best. There are few efforts this year from anglo-saxon publishers, contrary to past years.

    14.-Best Wine Education Book in the World

    Winner

- Rött, Vitt, Rosé, by Häkan Larsson, photos Pal Allan, Holger Edström, Roland Persson (Albert Bonnier-Sweden) Häkan Larsson was the editor of the main food and wine magazine in Sweden. His writing has a wonderful style, both informative and fun, which is precisely what readers look for when they want to learn about wine. The author has interesting opinions, it is a lively and entertaining book.

    Honourable Mention

- Sto Resnic O Vinu – A Hundred Truths About Wine, by Drago Medved (Verlag Hermagoras Mohorveja-Klagenfurt-Austria) This is a simple but complete wine education book, which is also quite informative on the slovenian wine culture.

    15.-Best Wine CD-Rom in the World

    Winner

- Guide des Vins Hachette 2002 (Palmos-Pocket PC-Hachette) This year the top french publishers Larousse and Hachette have invested in digital wine guides. These CD-Rom are extremely useful. The digital fashion is stagnating now, and other countries, maybe with the exception of Spain Gourmet guides, are no longer investing in CD-Rom.
