| GOURMAND WORLD COOKBOOK AWARDS 2003 FOOD AND WINE BOOK TRENDS SUMMARY 41% of the cookbooks we received were in english, against 33,7% for the total of cookbooks we received in french, spanish and german, and 25,3% in other languages. The cookbook market is becoming truly global, with Foreign Cookery Books being the leading category, followed by Easy Recipes. Mediterranean cookbooks lead the foreign category, ahead of asian, italian, french and latino, in that order. There is a new market for wine books, the guides and wine education books lead, showing there are more and more new consumers of new wines wanting new information. October 23, 2003 Cookbooks in English : 41% Gourmand has received over 3500 books, 15% more books than last year, in 31 languages. The quality of the books is increasing very rapidly, with excellent books coming now from Eastern Europe, or the Mideast. The cookbook publishers business is becoming global and very competitive, and the established leaders in the US, the UK, Australia, France, Germany or Japan need to check the newcomers. The cookbooks we receive give an idea of the relative weight of markets and languages: English 41% (From the US 19% , in total from 20 countries) French 13,5% (from 8 countries) Spanish 10,5% (from 14 countries) German 9.7% (from 6 countries) Other languages 25,3% Germany has been a difficult market for cookbooks but it is now recovering, and publishers are investing again in excellent titles, which will be clear in 2004 according to the projects we have seen at the Frankfurt Book Fair this year. The wine books we receive give the same ranking, with different percentages English 34% French 30% Spanish 12% Other languages 24% There are more and more books on wine from the new wine markets. There is also a real opportunity for translations of wine books. Foreign Cookery : 15,3% - Easy Recipes : 10,2% Globally, the strongest trends are the following, according to the number of titles published in each category. Cookbooks Foreign Cookery 15,3% Easy Recipes 10,2% Single Subject 8,2% Healthy Recipes 6,2% Chefs Books 5,9% Local Cookery 5,6% Desserts 4,9% Culinary History 4,3% Food Literature 4,2% Children Cookbooks 2,8% Fish and Seafood 2,7% Television Cookbook 2,5% Entertaining 1,7% Others 25,5% Others include guides, cheese, bread, and 10 more categories. Foreign : Mediterranean nº 1 Foreign Cookery is a category for books written on cookery other than that of the publishers country. The ranking is now the following among the foreign cookbooks. Mediterranean 3,5% Asian 3,2% Italian 2,7% French 1,3% Latino , Others 3,4% Mediterranean is a very strong leader. The interest is rising, mostly for North Africa and the Middle East. Books on Asia published outside Asia are challenging the Mediterranean leadership, and could overtake it. The previous leaders of 5 years ago, Italian and French, have remained stable. No apparent saturation for Italy and a slight increase for France. The food market is now truly global. Easy Recipes are very strong in english and german language countries. Single subjects are books centered on a food product or technique, such as the tomatoe, or the wok. They are increasingly popular, and seem to multiply the potential of cookbooks to be published. Healthy recipes and chef books continue to increase in number of titles, but slower than before. On the other hand, there is an increasing market in local cookery books, which are growing quicker than most other categories. Wine Books: Guides and Wine Education Nº 1 Among wine books, guides are the clear leaders in number of titles and in sales. Wine Education books are also increasing in number of titles, following the guide market. Wine History books for the sophisticated readers remain strong, while the big winner in growth this year is the number of spirits books.
