Press Release – December 2,2004

THE GOURMAND WORLD COOKBOOK AWARDS 2004

A COOKBOOK FEAST

In 2004, the deadline for receiving books for the awards was pushed back several weeks, to November 15, 2004. As always since the beginning, there is no entry fee, to allow publishers, authors or any reader to send us books. We have received 20% more books than last year, which is a total over 5000.

This is approximately one fifth of the 25000 titles published every year in the world. As we do not consider translations or reprints, and publishers do send us their best books, we get a large majority of the books of interest for the Awards. The quantity of new titles is increasing, and so is the quality. It is quite obvious that Asia, Eastern Europe and even Latin America are now producing books of equal quality as Europe or America, and that competition is becoming quite fierce.

This year we have winners from 66 differents competitions worldwide for food or wine books, against 53 last year. We are increasing every year our geographical coverage. In order to solve the logistics problem of receiving so many books, we have established donation programs with some of the major cookbooks and wine books libraries in the world. Here is a list of some recipients in several countries:

Europe :

Cookbook Museum and Library, Grythyttan, Sweden

    Ecole dHotellerie du Perigord, France

International Wine and Food Society, London, UK

    Biblioteca, LEsguard, Barcelona, Spain

America:

    COPIA, California, USA

We will consider applications from other interested librarians, provided they arrange for the transportation of the books.
