| Press Release December 7,2004 PEACE AND FOOD Peace is best achieved at the table, sharing food and opinions. In 2003, Engin Atkin from Turkey and Mirsini Lambraki from Greece shared an Award from the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards for their cookbook Two Nations at the same Table. It was published in Greece by Ellinika Grammatika and by S.Bank in Turkey. In 2004, in the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards, The Arab-Israeli Cookbook by Robin Soans receives a Special Award of the Jury. It is a very special book, published by Aurora Metro in Great Britain which gives a rare insight in the foods shared by two people which have much in common, at least for food. Claudia Roden writes a moving foreword: a Jew born in Cairo, the world expert on Mediterranean food knows better than anyone the roots of Middle East food. Other interesting food and wine books pursue this peaceful trend, and have been featured in 2004 by the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards. In Germany, a Diabetes Cookbook has been published in Turkish and German, Das Türkisher Diabetiken Kochbuch, by Seuda Atkas and Birgit Ranacher (Krenn). This is a positive step for the integration of Turks in Germany. Kulinarishes Arabien, a superb culinary trip through Arab countries, by Florian Harms, has been published by Christian Brandstatter. French publisher Agnes Vienot, takes us through the Souks, with the talented author Aymeric Mantoux and the excellent photographer Erick Bonnier . Finally, all the classic Islamic texts on wine and drunk drinking have been gathered in the hard cover reference book Anthologie du Vin et de livresse en Islam, by Malek Chebel, published by Editions du Seuil, which are now part of the dynamic groupe La Martinière. The success of these books show the strength of the Mediterranean way of life around the world, often adapted to local products in creative ways. This is the case of the Modern Jewish Cooking in Latin America, La Cocina Judia Moderna in America Latina, by Bona Diana Ergas, published by Mila in Argentina. In the past few years, Mediterranean food certainly has won its peaceful competition worldwide against other regional foods by demonstrating it is cheap, easy, tasty and healthy. |
