The Gourmand World Cookbooks Awards help publishers and authors understand how trends and categories of cookbooks are spreading around the world.

One immediate consequence could be the potential for translation, it also helps publishers and authors when they decide on their next book

Strongest Cuisines

1-Asian
2-French
  Mediterranean
3-Italian Latino

Asian is now the nº 1, and increasing its leadership
Mediterranean is strong but stable worldwide.
French is coming back, while italian is stagnating due to an over production of titles.
Latino is the new worldwide fashion, rising quickly.

Ranking of trends 2002

Publishers try to appeal to the widest range of consumers. Desserts are the ultimate comfort food needed by all. Books tied to television sell on the average 10 times more than non television Asian food is perceived as the most healthy, simple quick. Series of books enable publishers to capitalize on success. Innovation is necessary in a difficult market. Health is a strong short and long term trend. Barbecue is the entry for many new cooks.

The long term trends are parallel to the short term trends, with a basic need for simple, easy and quick recipes. Children cookbooks and chef books remain strong. There is a an international improvement in cookbooks design and photography, due to the global competition

NOTE : There rankings are for cookbooks, they should not be interpreted wrongly to be the same for the underlying theme or cuisine. For instance Organic or Vegetarian are not as strong yet for cookbooks as they could be. The same is true for fish and seafood. Maybe because good cookbooks take time to produce, cookbooks are usualy behing food trends. The above trends are global and may change within each region and country. The ranking are based on the quality and quantity of the cookbooks entered in the different categories of the Gourmand World Cookbook Awards.
